Suzhou, gardens & canals
A thousand years of refined good taste. Suzhou's UNESCO gardens are master-classes in stillness, the old canals still work, and it's close enough to Shanghai for a perfect slow day or two.
Day 1
The classical gardens
The Humble Administrator's Garden at opening (before the crowds), then a smaller, quieter one like the Master of Nets in the afternoon. We pace it so they don't blur together.
Day 2
Canals, silk & Pingjiang Road
Walk the Pingjiang Road canal lane, visit the silk museum, and take a small boat through the old waterways at dusk.
