City guide · Guangzhou
Guangzhou, dim sum capital
Come hungry. The home of Cantonese food does long, leisurely yum cha breakfasts, hides arcade lanes and island mansions downtown, and lights up the Pearl River at night.
Day 1
Yum cha & old Liwan
Start with a proper dim sum breakfast (we tell you what to order and how to brew the tea), then wander the arcaded streets and herbal-tea shops of old Liwan.
Day 2
Shamian Island & the markets
Colonial-era Shamian Island for shade and coffee, then the wild sprawl of Qingping market. Evening: a Pearl River cruise under the lit-up towers.
Day 3
Modern Guangzhou
Canton Tower and the new town if you like skylines, or a day trip to Foshan for kung-fu and ceramics.
